The Fouets et Badines Square

The popular silk square scarf is emblematic of the French fashion house Hermès.

Virginie Jamin, an expert in creating skillfully arranged compositions, frequently draws her inspiration from the collection of Émile Hermès. On each of her visits, the designer finds intriguing objects that are transformed into motifs for her next square scarf design.

This time she fixed her eye on an album noted as “colportage” dating from the start of the 19th century, proposing riding crops, canes, and other pieces from the collection. Her imagination completed this ensemble, in which she includes braided leather, sculpted wood, and carved ivory. A supple network of intertwined leather straps contrasts with the strict diagonal array of whip handles, many embellished with dogs’ or horses’ heads.
